Robert Ferdowsmakan, MD, DMD is proud to be a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Board Certification is considered the highest level of professional achievement attainable by a physician and surgeon.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan was raised in Scottsdale, Arizona; however, he now considers San Diego, CA home. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology at Arizona State University. He was then accepted into The University of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine, one of the eight Ivy League Universities. He graduated with top honors and was awarded the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Award For Excellence. Dr. Ferdowsmakan received his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine. He completed his surgical training at the UCLA Medical Center which included an internship in General Surgery and a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan practices the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including corrective jaw surgery, treatment of facial trauma, treatment of cysts and tumors involving the jaws, cleft lip and palate surgery, treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, treatment of temporomandibular joint and facial pain disorders, treatment of head and neck infections, microsurgical nerve repair, dental implants and bone grafting, dentoalveolar surgery and wisdom tooth removal and outpatient general anesthesia. Dr. Ferdowsmakan spends numerous hours on continuing medical education each year to remain at the forefront of the most current medical and surgical advances.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan is Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla. He also holds the position of Secretary/Treasurer of the San Diego County Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Study Club. Dr. Ferdowsmakan is a General Anesthesia Evaluator for the State of California.

Areas of Practice Interest

Dr. Ferdowsmakan has special interest and expertise in the area of corrective jaw surgery, also known as orthognathic surgery. Corrective jaw surgery is often life-changing surgery for many patients who may otherwise have severe limitations in jaw function. Dr. Ferdowsmakan regularly performs corrective jaw surgery as part of his surgical practice and has a passion for helping patients achieve their functional and esthetic goals.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan is actively involved in the treatment of maxillofacial trauma. He is an active member of the medical staff at Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego, Sharp Memorial Hospital and Rady Children's Hospital. These hospitals are major trauma centers serving large geographic regions of San Diego County. Dr. Ferdowsmakan regularly treats patients who have sustained maxillofacial traumatic injuries from motor vehicle accidents, industrial and work-related accidents and sports injuries.

Dr. Ferdowsmakan routinely treats patients with cleft lip and palate, hemifacial microsomia and other craniofacial birth defects. Reconstructive surgery can be truly life-changing for these patients and their families. Dr. Ferdowsmakan takes great satisfaction in performing the necessary surgery to improve these patients' lives.

Charitable Work

Dr. Ferdowsmakan regularly donates his time to charitable activities and enjoys giving back to the community. He is a volunteer surgeon with Fresh Start Surgical Gifts, a longstanding local charity organization that provides no cost reconstructive surgery to children with birth defects. Dr. Ferdowsmakan is also involved with volunteer organizations that provide surgical treatment for children with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial birth defects in Baja Mexico.
